How to Avoid Home Business Scams

You want to start your own home business but you do not want to fall prey to one of the many home business scams running rampant on the World Wide Web? You are not alone. Each year, con artists scam the masses out of millions of dollars and it makes many people leery of starting their own home business. That does not, however, mean you should not pursue your own home business. It just means you need to be careful when doing so. Here are some tips that will help to keep you from falling victim to any home business scams. 

 

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True… 

 

Remember when your mother told you if something sounded too good to be true, it probably was? You need to apply that golden rule to home business opportunities. If someone is trying to sell you a pie-in-the-sky story about a business opportunity that will make you very rich in very little time with very little work, you had better think twice about taking them up on the offer. All you are likely to get from such a deal is the experience of being ripped off and highly embarrassed. 

 

Do Not Part Easily With Your Money

 

You have probably heard that you need money to make money. That does not mean you should give it away to every Tom, Dick and Jane promising to make you rich with your very own home business. Many home business opportunities that request money up front are complete scams. That being said, there are some legitimate home businesses that require cash to start, such as those with franchise agreements or licensing arrangements and those that supply you with start-up supplies and inventory. Before investing money in any home business, check with the BBB to make sure they do not have outstanding complaints and pay with your credit card so you can dispute the charge should the services or supplies you receive not be what were promised to you.  

 

Recognize the Most Common Home Business Scams 

 

There are some home business scams that are decades old and if you want to avoid being taken, you are going to want to ensure that you are able to recognize them. You want to avoid anything that has to do with home business opportunities involving envelope stuffing, typing at home, assembling products at home and medical billing. You should also be careful when working with multi-level marketing opportunities (also known as MLM). While there are MLM opportunities that are legitimate and very profitable, there are also some that are outright scams. Before signing up for any MLM opportunity, make sure you are dealing with one of the legitimate organizations. 

 

Walk Away From High-Pressure Tactics 

 

If a home business opportunity is really legitimate, no one should pressure you into taking advantage of it. If a salesperson or representative is trying to push the opportunity on you, outright reject it. Any business that tries to force you into making a rush decision is probably trying to hide some things from you, and that is not a company you want to be doing business with.  

 

Do Your Research

 

 If you want to ensure the success of your home business, make sure you research it before getting involved. Perform market research and when dealing with a company, find out how long they have been in business and make sure you get references. Any legitimate company that is offering a home business opportunity should have references readily available.

 

 By following the above guidelines when looking into home business opportunities, you will be well-equipped when it comes to recognizing and avoiding home business scams. With the right amount of skepticism and the proper amount of research, you should be able to find a home business opportunity that is both legitimate and rewarding

5 “Must Do’s” When Evaluating an Online Business Opportunity

Are you wondering which business opportunities can produce a
real income and which ones are scams? Whether you are looking
for a good affiliate marketing program or a real estate
investment course you need to cut through the chase. With the
overwhelming promises that are out there today, it seems almost
impossible to know which way to turn for real information.

I have spent the last 8 years researching, testing and reviewing
business opportunities. Most of them have been scams or programs
with lots of promotion but little potential. Here are the 5
things I found to be important when evaluating business
opportunities.

1. Who is Behind the Business?

You can learn a lot just by picking up the phone and calling.
But don’t be surprised if 90% of the business opportunities out
there don’t have a phone number associated with the website.
2.5% have a phone number with a poor quality answering machine.
And the other 2.5 % have ‘slick willy’ ready to burn up your
credit card.

Yes, it will cost you a few nickels to talk with the business
owner but it is a cheap investment in your future. Here are some
things to note when you do get a live person. First, ask if
he/she is the owner. Second, if they don’t have a clear website
explaining what their business opportunity is about ask about
the things you feel are missing. Remember, if you do get a hold
of the owner, they will probably give you about 5-10 minutes of
their time so know your questions before you pick up the phone.

Other tips to remember are: If they try to sell you in the first
minute, they are more than likely just trying to get in your
pockets. If it is an associate answering questions, ask to speak
with the owner. If someone is hiding it is either because they
truly are too busy to talk with you or they have just hired
someone who is adept at punching in your credit card number.

Most people who do provide a working telephone number are
legitimate but use your good instincts and ask intelligent
questions and you will learn a lot.

2. Are there any lawsuits pending?

When I have been researching different business opportunities I
often type into Google the company name followed by the word
‘lawsuit.’ If there is a lawsuit pending, it will usually show

up in the first 20 listings. Whether you are trying to find out
if the hottest real estate guru is the real deal or the latest
internet marketer, the ones to avoid usually flush themselves
out quickly. One important point to remember is to verify the
lawsuit. Sometimes people are slanderous and just out to make a
good person look bad. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen.

3. Does the business opportunity promise you’re the World?

You’ve seen the infomercials or read the ads for business
opportunities that make claims like “Make $10,000 next week and
click here to see how Bob did it! “or “Sally worked only 1 hour
a day and made $5,000 her first week!” It is obvious they are
trying to get you to read further or act and make a purchase.
And there is inherently nothing wrong with marketing. People
expect to be sold. But, be skeptical when the offer says you can
make a lot of money in a short amount of time. If it sounds too
good to be true, it probably is. All businesses require work and
have a time period that it takes to get up and running and most
importantly, profitable. Get rich quick schemes are usually
scams.

4. What is the guarantee?

This one is kind of tricky because there are business
opportunities which offer a guarantee but don’t honor it. And
getting a refund can be next to impossible. You can protect
yourself by using an American Express business card or go to
Google newsgroups, type in the business opportunity and see if
there are any complaints of that nature. Again, I would call and
talk with the business opportunity owner. If you see a
complaint, question him/her about it.

By and by, most businesses standby their guarantee. Go for those
guarantees that exceed 30 days. And generally speaking, those
that offer a year’s guarantee are solid business opportunities.
A good thing to do is print out their guarantee just in case it
ever changes. That way you have physical proof.

5. Ask for Proof?

Again, most people make claims about their business opportunity
without providing any proof. If you are looking at a network
marketing opportunity, the company has to provide a yearly
report of income breakdown among its representatives. You will
find that very few network marketing business opportunities have
a great number of people making a lot of money. Some business
opportunities post bank statements with important information
blacked out. This can be useful information. But for the most
part, the majority of business opportunities make claims that
are difficult to substantiate. This is where all of your
research comes together and you have to use your best judgment.

Raymond “Ray” Albert Kroc (October 5, 1902 — January 14, 1984) was a Czech American businessman who took over the small-scale McDonald’s Corporation franchise in 1954 and built it into the most successful fast food operation in the world. Kroc was included in Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century, and amassed a $500 million fortune during his lifetime.

Action Item #1: Always Be On The Lookout For Opportunities

Most entrepreneurs don’t end up being successful with the product or service that they start with. There are always tweaks and changes that will happen once you start talking to customers and they tell you what they want. Your prospects and customers will lead you to many potential opportunities to grow your business – the key is to jump on those opportunities and take action.

In Ray Kroc’s own words: “The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it.”

Kroc started out as a salesman for paper cups and his customers twice brought him to new business opportunities that he acted on. Sometimes this can mean selling a completely different product or service than you were offering before. Look at your current customers – are there hidden business opportunities you can develop with them or improvements to what you currently sell that can bring them more value and put more money in your bank account? If you’re always on the lookout for new opportunities to grow your business you will eventually find the one you can hit a home run with.

Action Item #2: You’re Only As Good As The People You Hire

As your business grows beyond yourself you’ll realize the importance of having a good team. They are the ones representing your company, making decisions every day, and talking to your customers. Having a good staff will make or break your ability to build a successful company beyond yourself.

To make sure he had the best team possible in the early stages of the business, Ray Kroc personally took charge of the entire hiring process. Once he had made the decision to bring someone on board the McDonald’s team, Kroc would give each and every one of them a badge with the title of Management Trainee. It didn’t matter what their actual job was; Kroc wanted every employee to feel valuable and like an important part of the team. Kroc would then tell his workers to think of a better way to do their job or of any improvements that could be made in customer service, which could then be written down and placed into a Suggestion Box. The Suggestion Box led to countless successes like the Happy Meal, Filet-o-Fish, Big Mac, Hot Apple Pie, and Egg McMuffin.

When you hire a new employee make them feel like they are an important part of your team. Encourage their suggestions on how the business could be run better, create opportunities for them to advance, and let them know that you value their contributions. A loyal and hardworking team will reward you with outstanding business results.

Action Item #3: Be A Part Of Your Community

Ray Kroc launched a number of initiatives to help build the communities around each McDonald’s restaurant. First off he insisted that his franchise operators lived in the communities where they worked. He also hired regional advertising agencies so they could work “on the ground” and organize grand openings, birthday parties, and community programs. Finally he believed in community involvement through charities and the company continues to give back to this day as part of its corporate philosophy.

You don’t have to run a restaurant to be involved in your community. Just think about the people you sell to and where they hang out. Can you get involved in making their lives easier and better? It’s a longer term strategy but an extremely profitable one if you can win the hearts and minds of your customers by giving back.
